Vaccinations
VACCINE REACTION SYMPTOMS
If your pet experiences any of these symptoms post-vaccination call the office or if after hours proceed to the closest emergency hospital immediately.
These symptoms may be life-threatening.

Vaccinations
Core vaccinations for Dogs:
1. DHP/Parvo - This vaccine protects against canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo Virus, and Parainfluenza. These diseases are caused by various contagious, highly infectious viruses that can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting, diarrhea, to respiratory signs.
2. Rabies- Rabies is a viral disease that is always fatal. It is transmitted through bite wounds from an infected animal. Rabies can be transmitted to humans. It is easily preventable by keeping your pet’s Rabies vaccine current and avoiding situations where they may come in contact with wild or unvaccinated animals.
Dogs can be vaccinated at 12 weeks of age.
Other vaccines to consider:
1. Lyme - Lyme disease is transmitted by tick bites. Unlike humans, dogs do not develop the “bullseye rash.” In dogs, symptoms include fever, joint swelling,lethargy, vomiting. Lyme disease is very common in Rhode Island and while no vaccine offers 100% protection, by using tick preventative 12 months of the year, vaccinating for Lyme disease, and checking your pet each day for ticks, you are doing everything possible to protect your pet.
2. Bordetella (Kennel cough) - Bordetella causes a respiratory infection, most commonly seen as a non-stop hacking cough. Dogs in group settings, ie boarding kennels, doggie day care, grooming parlors, are at greater risk.
3. Leptospirosis - Leptospirosis is a bacteria most commonly transmitted through the urine of wild animals. No questionable characters in the neighborhood? Think again-any puddle that your dog walks through or drinks from is a source of contamination. Signs of Leptospirosis include vomiting, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Lepto can lead to liver and/or kidney failure.
4. Canine Influenza - Canine influenza is caused by a “Flu” virus and can be spread by direct contact, through the air, or via contaminated surfaces. Signs include coughing, low grade fever, nasal discharge,and loss of appetite. In about 20% of cases, dogs can develop a high fever and pneumonia. Signs can be similar to kennel cough and exact diagnosis is determined with bloodwork or nasal swabs.
Core vaccinations for Cats:
1. PVRC - Also known as FVRCP, this vaccine protects against a complex of viruses that can cause sneezing, runny eyes, nasal discharge and in the case of feline panleukopenia, diarrhea and severe dehydration. The viruses are passed cat to cat, with young kittens being most commonly affected.
2. Rabies - Although outdoor cats are more likely to come in contact with wild animals, indoor cats also need to be protected against this fatal disease. Each year in RI, indoor cats are exposed, either by bats or other wildlife entering the home, or by escaping outside for an unplanned jaunt.
Other vaccines:
1. Feline leukemia - Otherwise known as “FELV”, feline leukemia is transmitted through mating and bite wounds. Those cats that go outside are at highest risk, and any new cat broght in to your home should be tested. Feline leukemia can cause a variety of issues, everything from cancer to secondary infections caused by the destruction of the immune system.
Not all vaccines need to be given yearly - you and your veterinarian can determine what vaccines should be given to keep your pet healthy.

Distemper/Adenovirus (Hepatitis)/Parainfluenza/Parvo
This combination vaccine protects your pet from lethal and contagious airborne viruses. It is highly recommended for all puppies and dogs.

Distemper is a contagious disease spread by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs.
Canine Adenovirus Type-2 vaccine, or canine hepatitis, vaccinates your pet against Canine Adenovirus Type-1 and Type-2, which attacks the liver, kidneys, and causes respiratory infections.
Parainfluenza is a highly contagious virus that causes respiratory infections.
Parvo virus, or Canine Parvo Virus Type-2, is a contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract of puppies and dogs. Puppies under 4 months old are at the most risk for this virus.

Rabies virus

This vaccine protects your pet from the lethal rabies virus, which attacks the nervous system of mammals. It is required by state law. Most groomers will require the certificate of rabies vaccination to be presented.
Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis

This vaccine protects your pet from the leptospirosis bacteria, which is found in wildlife urine. This vaccine is recommended if you plan on taking your companion with you into wooded areas, especially areas with streams, rivers, or lakes. It is also recommended for dogs living in urban areas that could be exposed to rodents. If you live in a rural environment, or have farm animals, the leptospirosis vaccine is highly recommended.
Lyme

This vaccine helps protect your pet from lyme disease. This disease is contracted via ticks in our area. Combine this vaccine with tick prevention to protect thoroughly.

Lyme disease attacks your dog's joints and kidneys, causing lameness, swollen and painful joints, inflammation and dysfunction in the kidneys. vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, or abdominal fluid buildup.
Bordetella

Bordetella - Oral

This vaccine protects your pet from the bordetella virus, otherwise known as kennel cough. This vaccine is recommended and often required by other pet services.

Bordetella, or Kennel Cough, causes inflammation of the trachea and bronchial tubes. It is highly contagious and dangerous for puppies, senior dogs, or pregnant dogs, as it can develop into pneumonia in dogs with compromised immune systems.
Canine Influenza

Bivalent Canine Influenza

The Bivalent Canine Influenza vaccine helps prevent the two most common strains of the canine flu. Canine influenza can cause coughing, congestion, nasal discharge, runny eyes, lethargy, fever, or difficulty breathing. It is highly recommended for any dog that comes into close contact with different dogs. It is usually required for boarding and day-care services.

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis/Calicivirus/Panleukopenia
This vaccine helps protect your pet from lethal and contagious airborne viruses.

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis is an upper respiratory infection in cats and can cause coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, fever, loss of appetite, corneal ulcers, and pneumonia in kittens.
Calicivirus is another virus causing upper respiratory infection in cats. Common symptoms can include sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, conjunctivitis, ulceration of the mouth, and can lead to pneumonia.
Panleukopenia, or feline distemper, is highly contagious and fatal in cats. It attacks the cells that line the intestine, bone marrow and lymph nodes, which can cause shortages of white and red blood cells. Symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, nasal discharge, and dehydration.

Feline Leukemia

Feline Leukemia Virus
Feline Leukemia Virus can cause anemia or lymphoma, but it also suppresses the immune system which can leave your pet vulnerable to other diseases. Common symptoms include pale gums, yellow color in the mouth or whites of the eyes, enlarged lymph nodes, bladder or skin infections, upper respiratory infections, weight loss, lethargy, fever, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, sterility, or ulceration of the mouth. Recommended for outdoor cats, or any pet that comes into contact with other cats.
FIV
1 year
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
This vaccine helps protect your pet from FIV which can cause enlarged lymph nodes, fever, anemia, weight loss, loss of appetite, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, gingivitis, stomatitis, hair loss, sneezing, nasal or ocular discharge, frequent urination, or behavioral changes. FIV is slow-acting and may take years to show chronic signs. This vaccine is recommended for any outdoor cats or if your pet comes into contact with other cats.
